What it does
This tool exports the complex rules on your BigCommerce products to a spreadsheet. Complex rules (also called product or SKU rules) are the rules BigCommerce uses to adjust a product’s price, weight, purchasing status, and more, based on the combination of options (modifiers) or variants a shopper chooses.
You choose which products to include, pick a file name and format (CSV or Excel), and the tool builds the file in the background. When it’s ready, you get an email with a link to download it. The exported file uses the same column layout as the Import Rules tool, so you can edit it and import it straight back.
When to use it
- You want a full picture of the price and weight rules across your catalog.
- You’re about to make bulk changes and want to edit rules in a spreadsheet, then re-import them.
- You need to audit or share your current rule setup.
- You want a backup of your rules before making changes.
Before you start
- Decide which products you want rules for. You can export everything or narrow it down by SKU, category, brand, availability, condition, featured status, visibility, shipping type, or stock status.
- Have a destination in mind for the file (it’s emailed to you as a download link).
- Confirm you’re working in the correct store before you begin.
Step-by-step
1 Open the Export Rules tool from your BigCommerce tools.
2 On the Select Products step, narrow down which products to include (or leave the filters empty to include all).
- Sku — enter a SKU, or a comma-separated list of SKUs.
- Categories — choose one or more categories.
- Brand — choose a brand.
- Product Availability — Available, Disabled, or Preorder.
- Product Condition — New, Refurbished, or Used.
- Featured Products, Product Visibility, Product Shipping Type, Product Stock Status — optional further filters.
3 On the Export Options step, set a Filename (a dated default is filled in for you) and choose a File Format — CSV or Excel.
4 Continue to the Email Delivery step — the download link is emailed to you when the export finishes. Your account email is prefilled; change it or turn email delivery off on this step if you prefer.
5 Start the export. You’ll see a confirmation that the process has started; a link to download the rules is emailed to you shortly.
6 When it’s ready, download your file — from the email, or from the tool.

The export includes the columns below. This layout matches what the Import Rules tool expects, so an exported file can be edited and re-imported.

Troubleshooting / FAQ
Where’s my file?
The export runs in the background, so it isn’t downloaded directly in the browser. When it finishes, you can download the file from the tool — and you also receive an email with a download link. If the email doesn’t arrive, check your spam folder, confirm the address on the Email Delivery step, and make sure delivery wasn’t turned off (it’s on by default for exports).
My export is empty or smaller than expected.
Check your filters on the Select Products step. Filters like SKU, category, brand, availability, or stock status narrow the products included. Loosen or clear them to include more.
Can I edit this file and put it back?
Yes. The export uses the same columns the Import Rules tool reads, so you can edit the file and import it to update, create, or delete rules.
CSV or Excel — which should I pick?
Either works. CSV is the most universal; Excel keeps everything in a single .xlsx workbook.
