1. What is Magic Sorter?

Magic Sorter gives you complete control over the order products appear in your Shopify collections. Set up your sorting rules once — by dragging products into place or by choosing an automatic rule like Best Selling — and Magic Sorter keeps everything organized for you, on a schedule, without manual re-sorting every time inventory changes.

Base features (every plan):

  • Drag-and-drop custom sorting — arrange products in any order you like.
  • Property sorting — auto-sort by Best Selling, Newest, Price, Inventory, Name, and more.
  • Daily automatic sorting — collections re-sort on a schedule you choose.
  • Automatic backups — every sort run is backed up so you can undo it.
  • Large-catalog pagination — stays fast even with thousands of products.

Premium adds (see Plans & limits):

  • Auto-sort out-of-stock products store-wide — with automatic restore when they come back in stock.
  • Way more Saved Snapshots (50 vs 3) and Scheduled sorts (20 vs 1).
  • Longer backup retention (30 days vs 7).

2. Getting started (walkthrough)

Connect your store

1 Install

Install Magic Sorter from the Shopify App Store.

2 Open the app

Open the app from your Shopify admin (Apps → Magic Sorter). You’ll land on the Magic Sorter setup screen.

3 Choose a plan.

Choose a plan. During setup you’ll be sent to Shopify’s managed pricing page to pick a plan. Approve it and you’re returned to Magic Sorter — everything is billed through Shopify, so there’s no separate account or card to enter.

4 You’re in.

You’re in. You land on your Dashboard.

Your first sort

1 Sort Products

In the left menu, open Sort Products. You’ll see a list of every collection in your store.

2 Open the Sort Editor

Click a collection (or its Edit Sort action) to open the Sort Editor.

3 Choose a Sort Type

Choose a Sort Type:

  • Custom Product Sort — drag products into the exact order you want.
  • Property Sort — pick an automatic rule (e.g. Best Selling).

4 Drag products into place

If you chose Custom, drag products into place in the grid below.

5 Save & apply sort

Click Save & apply sort. Your new order is queued and applied to your storefront within about a minute, and a backup is captured automatically.

That’s it — you’ve sorted your first collection. Read on for everything you can fine-tune.

3. Sorting reference

The Sort Products list

Sort Products shows every collection in your store in a searchable table.

Columns

Column What it shows
Collection Image, name, breadcrumb path, ID, and product count
Sort type Custom Product Sort, a property name (e.g. Best Selling), or Not set up
Auto-sort On / Daily (runs automatically), Off (manual only), or — (not set up)
Snapshots Saved sort orders used vs your quota (e.g. 2/3, 2/50)
Updated When the collection’s sort was last changed (toggleable)
Last backup When the most recent backup was captured (toggleable)

Filters — narrow the list by sort type (configured vs unconfigured, custom vs property), auto-sort status, whether a collection has snapshots, and whether it has a backup.

Bulk actions (select one or more collections):

  • Run sort now — re-apply the configured sort immediately.
  • Auto-sort: On / Off — turn daily automatic sorting on or off.
  • Change sort type — switch selected collections to custom or a property sort.
  • Create snapshot — save the current order under a name.

Row actions (per collection):

  • Edit Sort — open the Sort Editor.
  • Restore last backup — undo the last sort run (asks for confirmation).
  • Delete Saved Sort — remove the configuration and reset to the Shopify default.

Refresh Collections — clears the cached list so newly created collections show up.

The Sort Editor → Sort & products tab

Sort Type

  • Custom Product Sort — you control the exact order by dragging.
  • Property Sort — Magic Sorter orders products automatically by a rule.

Property sort options

  • Your Featured Items Sort
  • Best Selling (most revenue)
  • Lowest Selling (least revenue)
  • Newest Products
  • Oldest Products
  • Name (A–Z)
  • Name (Z–A)
  • Price: Lowest to Highest
  • Price: Highest to Lowest
  • Inventory: Lowest to Highest
  • Inventory: Highest to Lowest

Custom sort options (shown when Sort Type is Custom):

  • New Products — whether products newly added to the collection are placed before your custom order (default) or at the end.
  • Sync New Products — when on, products newly added to your store automatically appear in this sort; when off, you add them yourself.
  • Move out-of-stock to bottom — floats out-of-stock items to the bottom. (Premium feature — see Plans & limits.)
  • Restore to original position — if you later disable the sort, return the collection to its original Shopify order.
  • Auto-sort — run this collection’s sort automatically on your daily schedule.

Quick Sort Helpers (shown when Sort Type is Custom)

Rearrange all products at once instead of dragging card by card:

  • Quick Sort Products By — apply a property sort (Best Selling, Newest, Price, etc.) once as a starting point, then fine-tune by dragging.
  • Quick Sort by Barcode / Handle List — paste a comma-separated, ordered list of barcodes or product handles and Magic Sorter reorders the collection to match. Pick the identifier from the Sort products by dropdown in the modal (Barcode is the default; if a product has no barcode, its SKU is used instead); the list pre-fills with the current order so you can rearrange it in place. Switching the identifier regenerates the list in that format. Products not in your list keep their relative order at the end.

The product grid

  • Choose a column layout for easier scanning.
  • Hide out-of-stock and Hide not-visible toggles to declutter.
  • Each product is a draggable card (thumbnail, name, barcode, price, inventory). Drag a single card, or select several and multi-drag them together.
  • For large collections, the grid paginates (see Settings → Product pagination); drag-and-drop works across pages.

When you’re happy, click Save & apply sort. After the first save, a Run sort now button also appears so you can re-run without changing settings.

4. Automatic (scheduled) Sorting

Instead of running sorts by hand, let Magic Sorter re-sort your collections every day.

1 Automatic sorting

Go to Settings and turn on automatic sorting (this is the store-wide default).

2 Pick a daily sort time and timezone

Pick a daily sort time and your timezone.

3 Daily sorting

Each day at that time, Magic Sorter re-sorts every collection that has auto-sort enabled, captures a backup first, and updates your storefront within minutes.

Per-collection control — you can override the store default on any individual collection using the Auto-sort toggle in the Sort Editor, or the Auto-sort: On/Off bulk action in the Sort Products list.

You can see recent runs in the Recent Activity area of your Dashboard, and undo any result with Restore last backup.

5. Backups & Snapshots

Open a collection’s Sort Editor and switch to the Snapshots & schedules tab.

Automatic backups — every sort run captures a backup automatically. Restore any backup with one click if you don’t like a result. Retention depends on your plan (7 days on Base, 30 days on Premium — see Plans & limits).

Saved Snapshots — save a named sort order (e.g. “Summer Sale” or “Christmas”) and re-apply it to the collection any time. Great for seasonal layouts you reuse year after year. Your plan sets how many you can keep per store (3 on Base, 50 on Premium).

Scheduled sorts — pick a date (and time/timezone) for a saved snapshot to apply automatically. Choose a one-off date or a recurring seasonal schedule (e.g. every year on a set date). Disable a schedule without deleting it whenever you like. Your plan sets how many schedules you can keep (1 on Base, 20 on Premium).

Example: Save a “Black Friday” snapshot, then schedule it to apply every year on your sale date. Magic Sorter restores that exact layout for you, hands-free.

6. Settings

Open Settings from the left menu.

Automatic sorting — the store-wide default for whether collections sort daily. When you toggle it you can choose to turn it on for all collections now, or just set the default that future collections follow.

Sort schedule — the daily sort time (the hour your automatic sorts run) and your store timezone. Save with Save schedule.

Product pagination — for performance on large catalogs.

  • Turn on Paginate large collections to split big collections into pages in the editor.
  • Pagination threshold (default 2000) — collections with fewer products load all at once; larger ones paginate.
  • Products per page (default 200) — how many products show per page in the editor.

Store-wide out-of-stock sorting (Premium) — keep out-of-stock products at the bottom of every collection automatically, and restore them to their original position when they’re back in stock. If you’re not on Premium you’ll see an upgrade prompt here. When enabled, all collections are enrolled automatically; disabling it restores each collection’s original order.

8. Troubleshooting & FAQ

A new collection isn’t showing in Sort Products.

Click Refresh Collections on the Sort Products list to clear the cached list.

I saved a sort but the storefront hasn’t changed yet.

Sorts are queued and typically apply within about a minute. Give it a moment, then refresh your storefront.

The editor is slow on a huge collection.

Turn on Paginate large collections in Settings and set a threshold/per-page that suits your catalog.

“Move out-of-stock to bottom” (or store-wide OOS) is greyed out.

That’s a Premium feature — upgrade to unlock it (see Plans & limits).

I don’t like the result of a sort.

Use Restore last backup (row action in Sort Products, or the Snapshots & schedules tab) to undo it.

Can I keep seasonal layouts and reuse them?

Yes — save a Snapshot and, if you want it to apply on a date automatically, add a Scheduled sort.
