Missing Data Finder for BigCommerce

🔧 Quick Info: Missing Data Finder scans your BigCommerce catalog for missing, invalid, or default product data and creates a downloadable CSV or Excel report. Each issue is listed on its own row so you can quickly identify what needs attention.

What It Does

Missing Data Finder audits your BigCommerce product catalog and identifies products with incomplete, invalid, or default information.

You choose which data checks to run. For example, the tool can look for products with empty SKUs, missing images, blank descriptions, missing dimensions, invalid UPC or GTIN values, default tax settings, or sale prices that are higher than the regular price.

The tool tests every matching product against the selected checks and creates a report containing one row for every issue it finds.

One Row per Issue: A product can appear more than once in the report. If the same product has no image, no brand, and an invalid UPC, the report includes a separate row for each problem.

You can scan your entire catalog or use product filters to narrow the audit to specific SKUs, categories, brands, availability states, or other groups.

The scan runs as a background job, so you can close the page while it works. When the report is ready, the tool notifies you and makes the file available for download.

When Should You Use This?

  • You are preparing a store for launch and want to find incomplete products.
  • You are planning a migration and need to identify missing or invalid catalog data.
  • You want to audit products before a marketing campaign or seasonal promotion.
  • You need to find products without images, descriptions, brands, categories, or SEO information.
  • You want to identify products that may be rejected by Google Shopping or another product feed.
  • You need to find missing or invalid UPC, GTIN, or MPN values.
  • You want to catch pricing mistakes such as a sale price that is higher than the regular price.
  • You want a downloadable report that can be shared with a catalog, marketing, or development team.

Before You Get Started

  • Your BigCommerce store must be connected to the tool.
  • Your store connection must have permission to read product information through the BigCommerce API.
  • Decide whether you want to scan your complete catalog or use filters to narrow the results.
  • Choose which missing-data and validation checks you want to run.
  • Choose whether you want the finished report in CSV or Excel format.
  • No upload file is required. Missing Data Finder creates the report for you.

How to Use It

1 Open the Tool

Open Missing Data Finder for your connected BigCommerce store.

2 Select the Products

On the Select Products step, leave all filters blank to scan your complete catalog. To narrow the audit, use any combination of the available filters:

  • SKU – Enter one SKU or a comma-separated list of SKUs.
  • Keyword – Search by product name or SKU.
  • Select Categories – Limit the scan to products in one or more categories.
  • Brand – Limit the scan to products assigned to one brand.
  • Product Availability – Choose Available, Disabled, or Preorder.
  • Product Condition – Choose New, Refurbished, or Used.
  • Featured Products – Choose Featured or Not Featured.
  • Product Shipping Type – Choose Free Shipping or Paid Shipping.
  • Product Stock Status – Choose In Stock or Out of Stock.
  • Product Visibility – Choose Visible or Not Visible.

3 Select the Checks

On the Select Fields step, select each catalog check you want the tool to run.

Every selected checkbox becomes a rule that is tested against each product included in the scan.

A commonly used starter group is selected by default:

  • SKU
  • Images
  • Image Alt Tags
  • UPC
  • GTIN
  • MPN
  • Sale Price greater than Price

4 Enter the Filename

On the Export Options step, review or change the filename. A default filename containing the current date is filled in automatically.

5 Choose the File Format

Choose the format for the completed report:

  • CSV – A simple, widely compatible format supported by most spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Excel – An .xlsx workbook that opens directly in Microsoft Excel and compatible spreadsheet applications.

6 Configure Email Delivery

On the Email Delivery step, choose whether you want an email when the report is complete. Confirm or change the email address that should receive the notification.

7 Start the Scan

Submit the report. Missing Data Finder scans the selected products as a background job, so you can close the page while it runs.

8 Download the Report

When the scan is complete, review the notification and download the finished CSV or Excel report.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

My report is empty

An empty report means none of the products included in the scan failed any of the selected checks.

If you expected results, clear or widen the product filters and confirm that you selected the checks you intended to run.

My report contains fewer products than expected

Review the filters on the Select Products step. An active SKU, keyword, category, brand, availability, stock, or visibility filter limits which products are scanned.

Leave all filters blank to scan the complete catalog.

The dimension checks did not find anything

Weight, Width, Height, and Depth checks are only applied to physical products. Digital products are skipped for these checks.

The same product appears several times

This is expected. Each issue is reported on a separate row. A product that fails several checks appears once for every problem found.

A UPC or GTIN was marked invalid

The invalid UPC and GTIN checks flag values containing characters other than numbers. Review the reported value for spaces, dashes, letters, or other non-numeric characters.

My large catalog is taking a while

Large catalogs and scans containing many checks can take longer to process. The report continues running as a background job, so you do not need to keep the page open.

Where is my report?

The scan runs in the background. When it is complete, you’ll receive a notification if email delivery was enabled and can download the finished report.
