What Is Magic Sorter?

Magic Sorter gives you complete control over the order products appear in your BigCommerce categories.

You can arrange products manually by dragging them into place or choose an automatic property-based rule such as Best Selling, Newest Products, Price, Inventory, or Name.

After your sorting rules are configured, Magic Sorter can reapply them automatically on a daily schedule. This keeps category layouts organized as products, sales, and inventory change.

Features Available on Every Plan

  • Drag-and-drop custom sorting – Arrange products in any order you choose.
  • Property sorting – Automatically sort by sales, date, price, inventory, name, and other product properties.
  • Daily automatic sorting – Re-sort categories at a scheduled time.
  • Automatic backups – Capture a backup before each sort so the previous order can be restored.
  • Large-catalog pagination – Keep the editor responsive when working with categories containing thousands of products.

Premium Features

  • Automatically move out-of-stock products to the bottom of categories across the store.
  • Restore out-of-stock products to their previous positions when inventory returns.
  • Save up to 50 Snapshots instead of three.
  • Create up to 20 Scheduled Sorts instead of one.
  • Keep automatic backups for 30 days instead of seven.

Automatic Sorting

Magic Sorter can reapply configured category sorts automatically every day.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Turn on automatic sorting.
  3. Choose the daily sort time.
  4. Choose the store timezone.
  5. Enable Auto-sort for the categories that should be included.

At the scheduled time, Magic Sorter:

  • Captures a backup of the current category order.
  • Runs the configured sort for each eligible category.
  • Updates the storefront category order within a few minutes.

Per-Category Control: Override the store-wide default with the Auto-sort option in a category’s Sort Editor or with the Auto-sort On/Off bulk action.

Recent automatic and manual runs appear in the Dashboard’s Recent Activity area. Use Restore Last Backup if a sort does not produce the expected result.

Backups and Snapshots

Open a category’s Sort Editor and select the Snapshots & Schedules tab.

Automatic Backups

Magic Sorter captures a backup before every sort run. Restore a backup when you need to return to the previous category order.

  • Free and Base plans retain backups for seven days.
  • Premium retains backups for 30 days.

Saved Snapshots

A Saved Snapshot is a named product order that can be reapplied later.

Snapshots are useful for recurring layouts such as:

  • Summer Sale
  • Back to School
  • Black Friday
  • Christmas
  • End-of-Season Clearance

Base plans can store three Snapshots per store. Premium plans can store 50.

Scheduled Sorts

A Scheduled Sort automatically applies a Saved Snapshot on a specified date and time.

  • Create a one-time schedule for a specific event.
  • Create a recurring seasonal schedule that runs every year.
  • Select the time and timezone.
  • Disable a schedule without deleting it.

Example: Save a Black Friday Snapshot and schedule it to apply each year on the day your sale begins. Magic Sorter restores the exact product layout automatically.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

A new category is not showing in Sort Products

Select Refresh Categories on the Sort Products page. This clears the cached list and loads categories created recently in BigCommerce.

I saved a sort, but the storefront has not changed

Sorts are queued and usually appear on the storefront within about one minute. Give the job a moment to finish, then refresh the storefront page.

The editor is slow for a very large category

Open Settings and enable Paginate Large Categories. Adjust the pagination threshold and products-per-page settings to match the size of your catalog.

Move Out-of-Stock to Bottom is unavailable

Per-category and store-wide out-of-stock sorting are Premium features. Upgrade to Premium to enable them.

I do not like the result of a sort

Use Restore Last Backup from the category’s row action or from the Snapshots & Schedules tab.

Can I save and reuse seasonal layouts?

Yes. Save the category order as a Snapshot. You can reapply it manually or create a Scheduled Sort so it runs automatically on a chosen date.
